Makeup Free Days For Your Skin

I talk about this a little bit in my founding story, but around the time of my big 4-0, I had a bit of a beauty crisis (or should I say unraveling?).  Every time I saw a new photo of myself, I couldn’t help but think I looked really old and haggard…and I couldn't stand it.  Entering my 40s was a big enough transition, and my perception of my appearance added a layer of difficulty. 

Without thinking, I started wearing more makeup.  Even casual weekend events, where I would previously have been happy to go makeup free, were now covered in makeup.  Not only was I reaching for my makeup more frequently, but when I did apply makeup, it was heavier…almost like I was padding up on armor or trying to mask myself. I didn’t want to give anyone a chance to even think that I might be losing it or not keeping it together.  And I didn’t want even the most random photo to tell me otherwise either.

This went on for a while, until I started working from home.  Now that I had the freedom to work from my kitchen table in a cozy bathroom with messy hair and Moo in my lap, I was less incentivized to put on makeup every morning.  And miraculously, after a couple of months of this, I noticed my skin looking better than ever.  There was a mind and soul aspect to this which warrants a separate discussion here, but objectively, my skin was looking more radiant and healthier.  The only big change had been less makeup.  Instead of a typical schedule of makeup 5-7 days a week, I was now makeup free most days. 

When you think about it, it makes total sense.  Without makeup, your skin can really breathe – foundation is by far the worst when it comes to suffocating your skin.  Also, your skin gets a big break from any toxic ingredients and chemicals that might be in makeup and can ultimately be absorbed through your skin.  Lastly, and I think this is the big one, it makes face washing so much easier and stress free.  When you have a full face of makeup on, you have to give yourself a proper sink-based double cleanse to adequately wash your face.  However, when it’s just skincare products and no heavy makeup, most of us can suffice with a gentle foam cleanser or even a cotton pad and micellar water.  Also, no rubbing or tugging to remove mascara or lip stick is huge for healthy skin – even if you follow all the steps of the art of face washing, it’s impossible to pull off a proper double cleanse without irritating the delicate skin around your eyes and lips.

Dr. Yoon adds, “even if you have relatively healthy skin, ingredients in various makeup products can cause allergic reactions in your skin.  Further, if you have skin issues such as acne or dermatitis, makeup can exacerbate such existing conditions and damage skin.”
