There’s nothing quite like a well-formulated hydrating face mask to level up your skincare routine–here's why.
Hydration and proper moisturization are the holy grail of skincare here at Soffli.
In particular, we believe in the hydration trifecta which includes using extremely hydrating products like a facial sheet mask, adding water to the air around you with a humidifier, and lastly, hydrating from the inside out by drinking lots of water.
Although there are endless skincare products that can help boost hydration, a 15-minute hydrating face mask session can be an amazing way to engage in some self-care to rejuvenate yourself. Adding this skincare regimen best practice can be one of the most efficient ways to boost your skin health. Let us explain why.
What is a hydrating face mask?
First things first: you might be wondering what we mean by a "hydrating face mask". What is that, anyways?
Hydrating face masks can take many forms (we cover the main types below) but generally they share the following commonality: they are skincare products that you apply to your skin for a prolonged period of time (starting from 5 minutes to overnight application) to deliver an intense dose of hydrating and nourishing ingredients to your skin in a relatively highly concentrated form.
Below are the different types of hydrating face masks:
Sheet masks are face-shaped sheets (with cutouts for the eyes, nose and mouth area) typically drenched in a cocktail of hydrating skincare ingredients.
The best thing about sheet masks is that they are super easy to use – they are typically packaged individually (so easier to keep sanitary), easy to apply to the face without any mess and usually can be discarded without washing.
These hydrating face masks can come in either a gel or cream form, and are designed to be applied directly on to the skin with a brush or fingers.
They can also contain intensely hydrating ingredients to benefit the skin but usually have to be rinsed off after some time (typically 10-20 minutes) which can be a hassle.
These hydrating face masks also come in richer gel or cream formulas. The main difference between these and wash-off masks is that they are applied before bed and washed off in the morning as part of your typical morning skincare routine.
Personally, I find them much easier to use than wash-off masks, but often, can’t feel the difference between these and rich moisturizers.
What are the benefits of Soffli’s hydrating face mask?
In formulating Soffli’s first face mask, we focused first and foremost on the hydration factor.
So for the ingredients list, we really focused on putting together an ultra-hydrating and moisturizing list of ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and arginine (amino acid). Then, we added a detox and purifying twist by using bamboo charcoal infused black cotton sheets instead of the standard white sheets you see more commonly out there.
Below are some of the benefits customers have noticed while giving our face masks consistent 5-star ratings:
- Intensely hydrates skin and locks in moisture to reveal a mini-facial like glow;
- Brightens complexion;
- Skin appears plumped up reducing the appearance of fine lines; and
- Skin feels soothed and relaxed.
Our expert dermatologist advisor, Dr. Yoon, says “Facial sheet masks are known to penetrate skincare ingredients 10 times better than simple application and can be an effective and convenient way to enhance hydration and moisturization levels in your skin at home. In particular, ingredients such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and amino acids are essential for healthy skin.” If you're looking for face masks for dry skin, you will love how ours makes you feel afterwards!
Your experience with our hydrating face mask product is also considerate of its texture and smell. For its texture, we wanted a facial sheet mask with cotton as the base material drenched in a lightweight but plentiful hydrating concoction of skincare goodies.
As a busy working mom, I particularly love how I can enjoy a blissful maskitation (mask+meditation) session, then just remove and discard this mask once I’m done instead of having to wash or rinse off.
As for its smell–it’s fragrance free!
If you notice any subtle scents, know that they are coming naturally from the ingredients. In particular, for those of you with sensitivity to smell, you might even get a whiff of the bamboo charcoal!
How do I apply my hydrating face mask?
Here is how we recommend getting the most out of your hydrating face mask product:
- Immediately after cleansing, gently unfold the sheet mask and place it over your face, adjusting around eyes, nose and mouth.
- Smooth out to fit your skin closely and leave on for 15-20 minutes (breathe, relax, meditate!).
- Remove and continue on with your daily skincare routine, starting with Step 1 Toner.
With the Soffli Detox + Hydrate Facial Sheet Mask in particular, you might notice slight foaming or stickiness which is totally normal and due to the high concentration of niacinamide, which is an amazing skincare ingredient known to brighten, hydrate and moisturize your skin.
Consider using 2-3 times a week morning or night as a special Step 0 to your daily skincare routine. Avoid contact with eyes. Always use sunscreen as part of your daytime skincare routine.
Special tips on how to make the most of a hydrating face mask?
These days, not only can you find separate neck creams to buy (which I don’t think you need to waste your money on), you can find separate sheet masks for your neck as well. I’ve tried a few but recently discovered a skincare hack that’s even better.
I take a regular facial sheet mask, cut it in half, and use half for my neck and the other half for my chest! Just like you can use the same moisturizer or face oil you use for your face to apply to your neck and chest area, you can do the same with facial sheet masks.
Using one sheet mask to cover your entire face, then taking another and putting half on your neck skin and the other half on your chest is the easiest way to boost your hydration levels all around and take better care of skin on the most critical areas of your body.
If you have a microcurrent or LED tool, try gliding it over your neck area a few times with the mask on for added stimulation and increased absorption of nutritious skincare ingredients. I love using the Soffli Detox + Hydrate Facial Sheet Masks in this way at least once a week for not just my face but my neck and chest too.
