As a continuation of our skincare secrets I learned from mom series, I ( = Charity) sat down with a college friend of mine Sarah who is a fitness trainer and health coach. Sarah is passionate about getting people moving in a way that leads to ‘whole person’ healing. She is proactively building a bridge between the fields of physical therapy and functional medicine within her own practice.
We are what we eat - this truth is something that she encourages all of her clients to understand deeply. Sarah’s glowing skin is a result of her adhering to these values for herself. Read on to learn more about the secrets of her beautiful skin!
1. What's your age, cultural/ethnic background and skin type?
I am 27 year old, Caucasian female. My heritage is a European mixture of German, English and Irish and this reflects into my fair skin type. I have always had skin on the drier side.
2. When and how did you become aware of the importance of skincare?
For as long as I can remember, I have been washing my face at night and in the morning with a basic cleanser sourced from family friends who run a local salon. I follow this with a gentle moisturizer.
When I think about influences in my skincare practices, a former hairdresser comes to mind. Several years ago, she gave me her top five skincare tips, which included using a moisturizer with SPF, and applying eye cream.
3. Tell me about your mom ... did she or other women around you influence your skincare journey?
Oh yeah - she has been my influence for everything! I can confidently say that without her influence, I wouldn't have adopted more than half of the routine that I currently use.
My mom was really key in helping to dispel the strange societal perspective that spending money and time on your own skin is selfish. This sounds silly, but there is a real pressure to believe this! My mom has helped me understand that caring for our skin is an extension of emotional well-being. If you feel good and look good, you are more likely to show up as your best self to those who need you to do that.
4. Any secrets/tips or anything unique to your skincare routine in general?
I try to drink 70-80 ounces of water every single day, and I drink herbal tea blends every night. Diet is really important, so I steer clear of fried foods to keep my pores clear. Using sunscreen is a must and the biggest not-so-secret secret that I know! I love knowing that I”m protecting myself from harmful sun rays. It’s an added bonus that sunscreen is the scent of vacation time!
5. What is your detailed skincare routine?
At night, I cleanse, apply toner and then a night serum, finishing off with a thicker night cream.
6. What is top of mind for you these days when it comes to skincare?
For me, it’s all about prioritizing self-care! I love my routine because it has become a practice to help me take the time to focus on my skin, which leaves me feeling great!
