I wake up around 6:20 am. I’m a natural morning person so enjoy rising with the sun (living without curtains helps!) and don’t like to lose the morning hours when I find myself the most productive.
The first thing I do in the morning as it relates to skincare is oil pulling. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic health practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth to remove bacteria, prevent inflammation and promote oral hygiene – some people say it can even help with teeth whitening.
I’m a firm believer that your glow starts from the inside out, and pulling is hugely beneficial in clearing out impurities from your mouth before you consume anything. After I brush my teeth, I’ll swirl a spoonful of coconut oil in my mouth for 15-20 minutes as I’m getting breakfast ready for the family. After I spit out the oil, I’ll do a quick warm salt water gargle, then rinse my mouth out with regular water.
The first thing I drink in the morning is hot lemon water with a dash of cayenne pepper. I just squeeze one quarter of an organic lemon into hot water and add some cayenne. This helps with digestion and lemon is also packed with vitamin C which is great for your skin. I’ll also consume half a teaspoon of pearl powder in my morning coffee.
I’ll usually try to get in some kind of workout in the morning then shower. 3-4 times a week, I will dry brush for 3 minutes before I hop in the shower to stimulate my lymph nodes and circulation. I also make sure to finish the shower ice-cold to tighten up my skin. As I step out, my morning multi-step routine starts.
I carefully go through 4-6 steps depending on the state of my skin and mood, starting with toner, serum, moisturizer, eye cream, face oil and ending with sunscreen (if I reduce, it’s usually eliminating face oil if I’m worried about pilling issues or my skin feels oilier that day).
On the days I find time, I’ll also maskitate. I put on a sheet mask before step 1 (toner), keep it on for 15-20 minutes and meditate with my legs up to boost circulation – a great way to set the intention for the day.
I make sure to moisturize my entire body too – the neck/chest and up, you should treat the same as your face, and the lower body you can just use one simple moisturizer. I’ll make sure I massage out my cellulite for 2 minutes or so at this time too using a roller of some type.
One of the more recent additions to my daily skincare routine I really enjoy is using a scalp essence and engaging in some scalp stimulation - it feels so good to treat my scalp as part of my skin.
I reapply sunscreen once at lunch time, and again in the late afternoon – but this depends on where I am and what I’m doing too. During the day, I’ll also make sure to engage in a daily green tea ritual since it's packed with antioxidants, vitamins and other nutrients, which can have powerful benefits for your overall health and skin. I drink at least 8-9 cups of water daily and take vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and fish oil supplements too.
At night time, I try to eat dinner before 7pm, wash my face and engage in the night time ritual as soon as it starts getting dark – definitely before I start feeling tired. I can’t give myself any excuses to wiggle out of the sacred nighttime steps!
If I’ve had makeup on, I’ll do the K-beauty double cleanse - an oil-based cleanser first followed by a foaming cleanser. Then the six steps again – toner, serum, moisturizer, eye cream and face oil, but this time ending with a 2-minute gua sha or sake glass massage, instead of sunscreen.
I also like to incorporate a quick LED session (in between steps 4 and 5) or end with putting on an overnight face mask cream on the days I don’t feel super hydrated. Dr. Yoon tells me sleep is the most important element when it comes to healthy skin so I try to prioritize at least 7-8 hours of solid beauty sleep every night.
That’s it! Of course, depending on my schedule and all of the inevitable forces of life I cannot control, I tweak my routine to take away or add on. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you have a clear routine that works for you and that you are sticking to like clockwork.
