The holiday season has officially begun! My favorite time of the year – I’m one of those people who can listen to Christmas carols all month long, and for a few days even during the summer.  I look forward to getting together with my family in Seoul, eating delicious yummies all day and indulging fully in the nourishment and coziness this time of year naturally brings forth. The only thing that stresses me out is thinking about what to get for my sisters as gifts!

We all have people in our lives that are extremely difficult to shop for, right?  Well, I have three and they are my fabulous sisters.  They are all super badass girl bosses in their own right – they can buy what they want and need easily, so it’s hard to impress or dazzle with “standard” merchandise.  Every year I struggle to find the perfect gift…but this year is different.  I already know what I’m going to give all three of them and it’s my tried and true homemade face oil - so easy to make!

As you might already know, I love face oil and it's included as step 5 to my multi-step daily skincare routine.  I landed on this recipe after going through the ingredients list of three of the most opulent (and supposedly "the best") face oils on the market today. I focused on identifying the ingredients on the list that were duplicative, listed towards the top (indicating their significance and potency), and had the functions I was looking for (mainly, directly benefiting skin instead of being there just because of their exoticness, or to enhance texture, smell or shelf life) and simplified to just the top 12 ingredients.  Then I experimented 2-3 times with different versions and after trial and error, finally landed on this luxurious SeoulofSkin recipe with a total of 10 ingredients.

You’ll need (more info here on where to get ingredients and formulation tips in general):

  • 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottles with measured marked dropper top
  • Rosehip seed oil (3 ml)
  • Jojoba oil (3ml)
  • Apricot oil (3ml)
  • Evening primrose oil (3ml)
  • Safflower oil (3ml)
  • Sunflower oil (3ml)
  • Sweet almond oil (10ml)
  • Carrot seed oil (1 ml)
  • Vitamin E oil (0.15 ml)
  • Lavender essential oil (0.25 ml)

First drop 0.15 ml (3-5 drops) of Vitamin E oil (it’s an antioxidant that will keep your oil fresh) into your 1oz bottle.  Then add 0.25 ml (3-7) drops of lavender oil (you can skip this if you don’t like the smell or otherwise don’t like essential oils), then 1 ml (~20 drops) of carrot seed oil (also an essential oil you can skip if you don’t like essential oils).  Then 3 ml of each of the bolded oils (I’ll call these “variable oils” since you can add or take away as you want), then fill the rest of the bottle up with sweet almond oil (this is your base oil).  I know this sounds a bit loosey-goosey…but that’s okay.  At the end of the day, besides carrot, vitamin E and lavender, the other oils are gentle and easy enough at most ratios.

Feel free to experiment with adding other oils you like and taking away others you might not love. Also, if you have sensitive or allergic skin, it’s recommended to do a patch test on the side of your neck, upper part of your inner arm or even a small area on your chin or cheek before you apply any new ingredients to your entire face.

For people who don’t use face oils, this recipe can be used on hair, hands and other parts of the body too.  It’s been my fail-proof gift for a long time now and my friends always ask for more.  Hoping it adds some glamorous cheer to your holiday season as well!
