Skincare Secrets I Learned From Mom (Deepika's Story)

Continuing on with our “Skincare secrets I learned from mom” series where the purpose is to discuss skincare habits and tips with real women from diverse backgrounds, today we’re excited to bring you Deepika’s story.

Deepika is 39 and moved to the U.S. from India when she was 21.  She has a beautiful tan complexion and normal type skin.  Deepika and I went to business school together and I always admired her beautiful skin and energy and loved hearing about ayurvedic skincare traditions from her in between classes.   Below is a summary of the skincare secrets she shared with us.

  1. Tell us about your skincare history. When did you become aware of the importance of skincare?

I didn’t understand the basics of skincare until I was well into my late twenties and have also been irregular about things. However, what saved my skin in the early years is that I wore almost no makeup at all and drank close to 3 liters of water a day during my growing up years in India. I maintained that through my twenties and thirties.

  1. Any secrets/tips that stem from your cultural background?

I’m a huge fan of homemade skincare remedies that come from India. The simplest being mixing a few drops of water in a cup full of chickpea flour and applying it to your face and letting it dry before you wash it off. It acts as a natural scrub! Other secrets that I have sporadically tried are turmeric, milk and honey and making a paste of it to apply to your face. It refreshes your skin and heals it. I’ve also noticed that the consumption of ghee, a quintessential good fat in Indian cuisine, has improved my skin tone. It has some amazing ayurvedic properties and I make my own at home and consume it every day.

     3. Tell me about your mom ... did she or aunts, sisters or other women around you influence you at all in your skincare journey?

My mother has beautiful skin even at her age today. My secret hope in life is to age as beautifully as her. Her only secret is consistently washing her face twice a day and using a simple moisturizer. That’s the most I’ve seen her do with her skin.

Both my sisters have experimented a lot with skincare and have influenced me greatly. My younger sister is very experimental and likes to try a ton of new products. She’s introduced me to serums and face oils from all the new hip brands. Because of her, I’ve tried a few new products, started following more YouTube influencers and have become more interested in skincare than ever before.

  1. What is your skincare routine?

My skincare routine is fairly straightforward. I wash my face in the morning and apply a sunscreen filled moisturizer. I usually wear no makeup most of the day. But if I do, I restrict it to some concealer below the eye and some powder on my face. At night before I go to bed, I remove my make up with cleansing oil and then apply a retinol-based product and a dot of vitamin C serum.  I also use an exfoliating face scrub once a week. I get facials twice a year but no more than that.

I also try to use Korean sheet masks before I have to go out for a special night out, like a banquet or a gala. I find that it moisturizes my skin and keeps the makeup on for longer.

  1. What is top of mind for you these days when it comes to skincare?

Top of mind is mostly about preserving my skin and actively educating myself on skincare. I believe skincare doesn’t have to be expensive. What I’ve noticed is that the more consistent I am, the less I need to do in order to look good and feel good about my skin.
