We’ve all been through a lot in the past year with the pandemic. Personally, I feel the weight of the past year on my rounder belly, slumped mood, bored state of mind…and my hand skin!
I’m pretty sure last year was a record for frequent hand-washing. As much as I tried to take good care of the skin on my hands by using hand cream after each wash, my hands definitely have taken a beating recently.

If you’ve read my prior articles, you might know that of all the skincare tools out there in the modern world today, my favorite by far is the simple gua sha. In my humble opinion, this simple gadget will give you the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to skincare tools.
I use the gua sha daily as the last step to my regular skincare routine. Typically at night, after my last step of face oil or after applying the Soffli Detox + Hydrate Facial Sheet Mask, I will take my beloved gua sha tool to do a quick face massage daily. With just a few strokes and a couple of minutes later, not only can I see the circulation in my face improved with rosier cheeks and a glowier complexion, I can also feel the fatigue melting away from my face. In case you didn’t already know, the magic powers of the gua sha tool are not confined to your face. My second favorite place to apply this tool are my hands. The technique is very similar to the face massage. After applying a few drops of your favorite face oil or hand cream to your hands, using the gua sha tool, gently scrape the inside of your hands using the curved side of the gua sha tool from finger tips to wrist.
The order can be however you want it to be but make sure you scrape each finger to wrist at least 3-5 times and complete this on the top and bottom side of your hands. Use gentle but firm pressure, so the scrapes feel good but don’t hurt or bruise. Once you finish the top and bottom of each hand, you can also scrape a few times between all fingers.
I got advice from my Korean facialist years ago that in order to properly drain the lymph system, it’s important to scrape from extremities towards your heart so make sure you’re careful with the direction of finger tips to wrists. Otherwise, there really is no wrong way to do this.
The gua sha hand massage has been a welcome addition to my very tired and over-washed hands. Couple with the habit of carrying hand cream everywhere and sunscreen during the day time, you should be able to take proper care of your hand skin even during the roughest of times!
