The health benefits of vitamins A, C and even E are generally well understood, especially as it relates to healthy skin. But what about vitamin B? Does this family of vitamins have anything specific to offer our exploration of effective skincare ingredients?
The short answer is yes! And to better understand the wonders of this special letter in the alphabet of vitamins, we need to revisit our biology class to fully appreciate it.
The first thing to note about vitamin B is that there are eight different types. Yet one of the vitamin Bs (B3, or niacinamide) stands out in the crowd for its amazing skincare enhancement and healing properties.
Why is vitamin B3, or niacinamide, so important in skincare and overall health? We generally ingest Vitamin Bs by consuming foods with high traces of them, or topically, as is the case with vitamin B3. Introducing niacinamide into our skincare routines either in the form of an oral supplement or topical product is a wonderful step towards improving the aging process and protecting our skin from potential damage that can be caused by external stress inducing factors.
So what does niacinamide do? There are multiple studies that show the generally positive impact of niacinamide on the skin. In these studies, notable improvements were found related to the reduction of fine lines or wrinkles, the minimization of hyperpigmentation spots, and the smoothing of blotchiness. The compound has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a strong contestor in treating inflammatory skin issues such as acne. When it comes to moisturizing our skin, niacinamide has been shown to assist in the skin’s ability to retain moisture.
Dr. Yoon sings its praises too saying, "Niacinamide is effective in improving acne, strengthening the skin barrier, reducing the moisture loss in the epidermis, and keeping the skin healthy and youthful looking."
Niacinamide is also known to be relatively gentle to the skin. While you will generally not see high concentrations of vitamin B3 greater than 5% in skincare products, those with sensitive skin can rest assured that topical application is tolerable yet effective. Additionally, niacinamide loves to work together with other ingredients. This ingredient is a great complement to our other favorites, such as peptides, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and AHAs.
Where can you get niacinamide? It's naturally occurring in several foods such as lean meats, fish, nuts, and legumes. Given its supportive skincare benefits, you can also find this ingredient in several skincare products such as serums, moisturizers, and masks. The SOFFLI detox + hydrate facial sheet masks contain a high concentration of this amazing ingredient, along with hyaluronic acid, amino acid and bamboo charcoal.
Niacinamide is an ingredient that comprises so many excellent qualities, while also being safe and kind to our skin. Not only can we build up our skin’s natural glowing qualities by using this ingredient, we can also develop additional protection from skin damage and extended regenerative capabilities while aging. It's is a winner for so many reasons in our formula book!
