As you might already know, we’ve been getting some great expert opinions and advice on all issues related to skincare from our amazing Dr. Yoon. Dr. Yoon is a certified dermatologist who has been running his own clinic in Gangnam, Seoul (yes, people – this is where “Gangnam Style” was born and the heart of all K-beauty trends and innovation!) for the past 15 years.
In addition to getting his thoughts on general skincare issues, we thought it would be valuable to dig into his personal skincare habits and secrets … and understand what this K-beauty skincare expert does for his skin and why. Below is everything he had to share with us:
- What is your age and skin type?
I’m 49 years old with combination skin that’s on the dry side. My skin is generally dry, but can get oily in my T-zone area.
- When and how did you learn the importance of skincare?
An event that really sticks out is when I was at Seoul National University Hospital researching old farmer's skin in the rural areas of Korea. We noticed how even in one farmer, the areas of skin exposed directly to the sun such as the face and neck were drastically aging and damaged as compared to other parts of the skin covered from the sun like the inside arms. This made me realize that although genes may play a part, how you take care of your skin is critically important in skincare.
- What is your daily skincare routine?
I try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night because sleep is the most important factor in skin regeneration. Also, it’s important to get to bed before midnight as midnight to 2 A.M. is the critical time period for skin regeneration. That’s when growth hormones are secreted from your body which aid in skin turnover.
The other thing I focus on is moisturizing. When the skin barrier is properly restored through moisturizing, skin tone becomes brighter and skin elasticity is improved. I make sure to apply an appropriate amount of moisturizer daily and depending on the season, will utilize a humidifier accordingly.
- Do the women around you influence your skincare practices?
Yes, as the head of a dermatology clinic, I feel pressure to have healthy skin to show a good example to my female patients! This motivates me to take better care of my skin.
- Besides procedures and products, what are the most important factors in skincare?
As I previewed earlier, my firm belief is that for healthy skin, there’s nothing more important than sleep and moisturizing. In my opinion, sleep and moisturizing account for about 70% of the personal skincare pie. Although other factors like food and exercise are important for your overall health, when it comes to skincare, their direct impact is less than 10%. This means that without good sleep and proper moisturizing, even the best diet or exercise can’t save your skin.
- What’s top of mind these days for you when it comes to your skin?
I’m noticing that with age, the skin around my jaw line is slightly drooping and I’m trying to take better care of this area.
- Please tell us about the hottest treatments in Seoul these days!
Recently in Seoul, in addition to the existing skincare lasers, popular treatments have been focused on either going deeper into the skin or regenerating the skin.
Examples of treatments going deeper into the skin would be thread lifting, Ulthera, Thermage Total Tip and botox. Since the aging of the skin involves not only the outer layers of the skin but also the fat and muscles underneath, these treatments are focused on going deeper to treat at all levels.
In terms of treatments for skin regeneration, combining DNA or PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections with lasers has been gaining traction.
