It’s incredible to see the mass impact Coronavirus has had on the world we live in. I’m constantly getting emails and notices about cancelled conferences, gatherings and trips. My yoga studio and pilates place both sent out emails on what they’re doing to combat it – including implementing hands-free check in and extra wipes everywhere. People are hesitant to shake hands or give out hi-fives. For the first time, I’m seeing non-Asian people wearing masks on the streets of LA! When I talked to my sister in Seoul, as you might imagine, it was drastically more severe. She tells me no one is going to work and it’s like a ghost town these days. I asked how people are even eating (since she told me no one will dare venture into a restaurant or supermarket), and she said mostly through online deliveries!
The Coronavirus scare has gotten me thinking about a lot of topics, big and small, including prompting me to reexamine my skincare habits and routines. I have some practical tips to share that might be effective in preventing sickness and also be good for your skin.
First, the most important thing is to wash your hands often and well and immediately apply hand cream afterwards. It's been reported that during the SARS epidemic, hand washing reduced the risk of transmission by 30 to 50 percent. When washing your hands, make sure to lather generously with soap and focus on scrubbing the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails too. Make sure to wash under clean running water for at least 20 seconds (sing “Happy Birthday” to yourself twice, similar to what you would do for the ice-cold finish), then pat with a clean towel and apply hand cream right afterwards. Now that we’re all washing our hands so vigorously, we’re constantly stripping off the natural oils on our skin and drying them out. There’s never been a more critical time to carry hand cream with you everywhere!
Second, be extra mindful not to touch your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth area. I already covered the importance of not touching your face for healthy skin here, but it’s become increasingly important with the rise of Coronavirus. Even if they don’t look it, your hands are probably dirty. Touching your face with unsanitary hands can not only cause breakouts but also spread germs and diseases. We aren’t necessarily conscious about this, but as the day progresses, think about all the random filthy stuff our hands come across. Pens, door knobs, computers, elevator buttons, staircase railings, restaurant menus, pepper and salt shakers, etc.
Third, consider upping your vitamin C levels to boost your immune systems. I love taking some extra vitamin C for my skin health and find it effective during cold and flu season as well. Now would be a perfect time to eat an extra potion of delicious vitamin C packed fruit or additionally take an extra vitamin C supplement like the Korean Vitamin C man I wrote about previously.
Lastly, stay calm and carry on. I agree it’s scary but worrying and stressing out never helped anybody.
