Your Skin On Water - The Ultimate Water Challenge

By Susie

  • Realizing that I clearly had not been drinking enough water and most likely was painfully dehydrated, I embarked on a one-month water challenge
  • The ambitious goal, to drink 12 cups of water a day for a month!
  • The best thing that happened was that my lips were no longer chapped!

My husband has always had amazingly clear skin. I can count on one hand all the times he’s had a pimple or any other type of skin issue. His skincare routine is worse than my toddler's so it has nothing to do with products, or practice even. Besides genes, the only think I can think of that might be his secret, is water.

This guy drinks a ton of water every day, like guzzles it the minute he wakes up. I’ve obviously heard about the benefits of drinking plenty of water and also think my husband might be living proof. With SeoulofSkin’s focus on water this month, I decided to start a water challenge to see if I’d experience the benefits of drinking more water: glowing skin, more energy, better sleep and less hunger.

First, a reality check.  According to experts, at the bare minimum, we should all be drinking at least half our weight in fluid ounces of water every single day. If I applied that formula to my current intake of water...sadly, it would put me at 64 lbs. in weight…which means I would be around the same size as my eight-year-old daughter. So safe to say that I clearly had not been drinking enough water and most likely, I was painfully dehydrated.  Answering Lauren's questions on my water habits also made me determined to change for the better.

I decided to go big and step up to the challenge – my ambitious goal, to drink 12 cups of water every day for a month! I started my challenge with great motivation and waited for the benefits to kick in.  This is how I felt after the first week:

  1. Glowing skin - not yet
  2. More energy - I was tired from having to walk to the bathroom all the time
  3. Better sleep - I woke up in the middle of the night to pee a lot
  4. Less hunger - who has time to eat when all you do is go to the bathroom?

On top of that, I felt like I got nothing else done. Apparently, I have a bladder the size of a baby and most of my waking hours were spent either drinking water, walking to the bathroom, or just in the bathroom.

I was starting to wonder if I should just abort but as the weeks went on, I started to feel better. I didn’t crave sugar as much and I did feel lighter, like I was doing a detox cleanse. At the end of the month, my skin did seem visibly brighter, not like I just got dermabrasion brighter but more of a nice after facial glow, like after a maskitation session. I also ended up making better food choices throughout the month and ate healthier. Being so full of water all the time, I didn’t feel hungry as much.

The best thing that happened though was that my lips were no longer chapped. I’m gross and always picking at my dry lips. I slather on a stupidly expensive lip balm 100 times throughout the day because my lips always feel dry. While doing the water challenge, my lips started to feel super smooth and supple. Finally!

In case you’re curious, below are a few tips to help you get started on your own challenge:

  1. Get a reusable fun water bottle that holds a lot and carry it with you all day. I like stainless steel because it keeps my water at my preferred temperature.
  2. Definitely finish your water goal for the day at least two hours before bed so you’re not up all night going to the bathroom.
  3. Make it fun - you can find plenty of healthy and natural flavor enhancers to add to your water to spruce it up - berries, mint, cucumber, and apple flavors are some of my favorites.

Overall, my water challenge didn’t result in a drastic change and miracles didn’t happen.  However, the subtle benefits were noticeable.  Now knowing the science behind water and how important it is for healthy skin, I intend to keep on with my practice of drinking plenty of water daily.  Who knows, maybe one day I'll catch up to my husband's well-hydrated glow!
