It's 2 am in the morning. I pop my eyes open wide awake, confronted by the incessant irritation of my underarms. I am scratching relentlessly because the irritation is too much to bear. My husband elbows me in his sleep to help stop the scratching. There is no way to find relief. I get up to go to the bathroom, hoping that a hot compress would soothe the inflamed skin. I stare back at myself in the mirror, wondering if there is any way to reset the microbiome community waging war just under the surface of my skin? That's when I began my search to find a natural solution to help recover my underarms.
When people talk about skincare, you don't usually hear mention of the less than glamorous armpits. But our underarms are one of several delicate areas of our skin organ. The underarms is home to the apocrine gland, responsible for responding to adrenaline and are home to many lymph nodes - a key player in the removal of toxins from the body! Emotional sweating also involves the apocrine gland. Like most things in our life, our underarms desire desperately to be re-balanced. If your body is giving off an unusually sour odor when you sweat, it may be a sign of the bacteria on your skin breaking down the sweat - this activity releases unpleasant smells from the underarms. Right on the surface where millions of bacteria go to work . . . this delicate and unfashionable part of our beautiful bodies also needs a break from the daily grind.

I have found that a routine underarm detox has been a wonderful addition to my skincare practice. I tested out the following homemade solution and found a material difference in my sweat glands' ability to operate well and with less odor. If you'd like to give it a try, read below for the steps!
What you’ll need for the detox mask:
- 1 teaspoon of Bentonite clay
- 1 teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar
- 2 teaspoons of filtered water
- A dollop of coconut oil (optional)
Give your underarms a gentle wash with warm water. Taking a small glass bowl, mix the ingredients (except for the coconut oil) together until they form a paste. Then apply a portion of the mask onto your underarms, spreading a nice layer across the entire surface area. Let the mask sit and dry onto your skin for up to ten minutes. Hop into the shower to rinse off or use a warm wet cloth to wipe the paste away. You can top off this treatment by smoothing coconut oil on the freshly detoxed skin.
The difference for me was immediately noticeable. Here's how it works:
- the clay draws out the toxins,
- the vinegar resets the pH levels,
- the coconut oil soothes and also offer antibacterial qualities.
This is not a daily detox, so repeat maybe twice a month, or whenever you notice a change in your body's interaction with your deodorant. I would also recommend making this mask fresh every time you detox your underarms.
